It’s been a busy first month of school in the South Middle School library. To begin the year, all 6th and 7th grade students visited the library with their language arts classes to review library expectations and check out a book or two. The school full of readers and many students have been back multiple times for new books. Currently, the top five books being checked out in our library are:

  1. The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins
  2. Catching Fire by Suzanne Collins
  3. The Maze Runner by James Dasher
  4. Girl, Stolen by April Henry
  5. Sisters by Raina Telgemeier

All 6th and 7th grade students were also able to preview the 2015-16 Iowa Teen Award and Iowa Children’s Choice Award books through book talks, as well as book trailers.  In April, students who have read at least two books off of the lists will be able to vote for their favorite title, along with all of the other secondary schools in Iowa, to determine a winner for our state.

Recently, 7th grade health classes have been utilizing the library to conduct research and create persuasive presentations on a health related topic of their choice. Topics included the importance of wearing a helmet, not texting while driving, staying hydrated and eating balanced meals.

What’s next? 7th grade social studies classes will be researching individuals, events or another aspect of the Medieval time period and our annual book fair will be taking place during Parent Nights on November 4 and 5. Hope to see you there.
